World Day Against Child Labour 2022: Children are the future pillars of our nature. They have the ability to take a nation to new heights. 12th June 2022 is a day to spread awareness against child labour. According to UNICEF, it is child labour if a child is too young to work or is involved in a hazardous activity that can cause harm to their physical, mental, social, or educational development. Children get pushed into child labour either because they have no family or due to poor financial conditions in their families. 1 in 10 children of a minimum of 5 years are involved in child labour. Hence, the aim of this day is to create conditions in which children lead a stable life.

History of World Day Against Child Labour

The International Labour Organization (ILO) was found in 1919. Its goal was to promote social justice. To this date, the organization works towards the welfare of labours worldwide. Later in 1999, the ILO’s convention “Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention” got approval. Finally, in 2002, the organisation declared The World Day Against Child Labour. The goal was clear. To eradicate child labour. 

Significance of World Day Against Child Labour

The day focuses on spreading awareness against the practice of child labour. It is observed to get people talking about child labour and the conditions that cause it. Another important significance of this day is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030. 

A child getting into child labour means a future destroyed. Imagine the possibilities that are born with a child’s birth. Child labour causes an end to all of these. Therefore, World Day Against Child Labour is important to let these possibilities grow.

Theme of World Day Against Child Labour 2022

The World Day Against Child Labour 2022 theme is “Universal Social Protection to End Child Labour”. We all know that the ultimate goal is to eliminate child labour entirely. But how do we make that happen? According to the 2022 theme, this can be made possible by increasing social protection for children. These systems will fight against poverty to eliminate child labour. 

The Governments of all the nations must provide social protection systems. By supporting the living of unfortunate children, their vulnerability to exploitation can be reduced. Investments should be made into systems that help tackle the problem of child labour. The only solution is to end the conditions that eventually give rise to child labour.

Child Labour Policies in India

• Article 24 of the Indian Constitution states that “No child below the age of fourteen years shall be employed to work in any factory or mine or employed in any hazardous employment”
• The Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act of 1986 prohibits employing children in 13 occupations and 57 processes. These occupations include transportation of goods by railways, selling of crackers and fireworks, foundries, and handling of toxic substances, etc.
• If a person is found to employ children in these occupations, they will have to serve an imprisonment of a minimum of 3 years
