In India, we celebrate World Students’ Day on October 15 every year. The day is marked to remember the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He was India’s 11th President and served the post from 2002 to 2007. He was admired as the People’s President. Dr. Kalam was born and raised in Rameswaram, a small town in Tamil Nadu.

Dr. Kalam was an aerospace scientist and teacher by profession and passion. He was an important asset for India, and looked after several important and secret projects, serving over four decades in DRDO, ISRO.

He also played a crucial role in making India a nuclear power. Under his leadership, the Pokhran-II nuclear test was conducted successfully in 1998, which earned him the title of “Missile Man of India”. India’s missile defense and space programs gained special momentum and success under him.

For students, this day holds special importance because the journey of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam teaches us that, no matter how many obstacles come our way, through education, we can overcome every challenge. One of his famous quotes is, “you have to dream first to succeed” which inspired a generation of students and children to do what they love. 

Dr. Kalam’s life, both private and as a student was full of difficulties. He used to sell newspapers door-to-door to support his family and his education. But Dr. Kalam’s focus and will to succeed overshadowed his struggle. It was only his hard work that earned him the highest constitutional position in India, the President.

His story serves and will continue to inspire many generations to come along with him, and there is no better way to celebrate his birth than dedicating his day to Students’ day.

October 15, which is the birthday of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, is observed as World Students’ Day in India and Worldwide. The day is being celebrated since 2010. Dr. Kalam was an aerospace scientist, author, articulate speaker, and most importantly, a teacher. Dr. Kalam was one such personality with zero haters. He was also the 11th ‘Supreme Commander of India’, and widely referred to as “People’s President”.

The government of India proposed and declared his birthday as World Students’ Day as a mark of tribute to his works, dedication, determination, and service to the nation which changed India’s image globally. Besides being a scientist, he was one of the best possible teachers, who believed and made us believe that teachers are the building blocks of society, who shape students of the present into jewels of the future.

Born in a small town in Tamil Nadu, Rameshwaram, Dr. Kalam was an ideal figure who turned out to be an inspiration and an icon for every generation. He was a great leader with a far-sight vision. His primary aim was to make the teaching ecosystem friendly to students so that it leaves a positive impact on them. 

Dr. Kalam wanted to be remembered as a teacher. The teaching profession is something he loved by heart and did it till he breathed his last. Dr. Kalam was delivering a lecture to the students of IIM Shillong when he breathed last. Dr. Kalam was involved in many secret missions of India’s missile and space programs. He dedicated 40 years of his life as a scientist and science administrator primarily at DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). During those years, and for his work, he has been termed the Missile Man of India.

Dr. Kalam was known for his balanced and secretive approaches. He played a crucial role – organizational, technical, and political – in conducting India’s successful Pokhran-II nuclear test. This raised India’s stature in the world, upsetting big powers. Dr. Kalam was honored with several decorated highest civilian awards which include Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan awards.

He wrote many notable books, like Wings of Fire, India 2020, Ignited Minds, Indomitable Spirit, and Transcendence: My Spiritual Experiences with Pramukh Swamiji. Dr. Kalam’s contribution to India’s growth and his love for the teaching profession made the former president’s birthday the best day to celebrate as World Students’ Day.
