Short Speech on World Mental Health Day

Good morning members present in the house. Greetings, my name is Shaira (your name) from Standard 12 (your class). Today, I will give a short speech on World Mental Health Day.

On October 10, 1992, World Mental Health Day was celebrated for the first time. The then Deputy Secretary General of WFMH, Richard Hunter took the initiative to celebrate this day.

World Mental Health Day was celebrated with a theme for the first time in 1994. The theme was “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services throughout the World”, which was suggested by then Secretary General Eugene Brody.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the mental health of all, which gave rise to short and long-term stresses.

According to a UN report, there is a 25% rise in both anxiety and depressive disorders during the first year of the pandemic. Fuelling the crisis, mental health services too came to standstill as manpower was shifted to diagnose covid. This disrupted services and the treatment gap for mental health conditions widened.

Even In high-income countries, over three-fourths of people with depression report that they do not receive adequate care. The case is worse in low and middle-income countries. This pathetic situation is another man-made crisis as governments across the globe spend an average of just over 2 percent of their health budgets on mental health.

But after a long wait, the world is slowly recognizing that there can be no health without mental health.

Thank you.

Long World Mental Health Day Speech in English

Good morning members present in the house. Greetings, my name is Shaira (use your name), a graduate-level student (replace it with your degree). Today is World Mental Health Day, and I’ll be speaking a few lines on the topic.

World Mental Health is celebrated to raise awareness about mental health, which most neglect primarily. It is celebrated on the 10th of October.

Mental health conditions can have a negative impact on all areas of life, irrespective of age, profession, or even in relationships with family and friends. Depression and anxiety cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year.

In recent years, there has been increasing acceptance of the important role mental health plays in achieving set goals. Sadly, Depression is one of the leading causes of disability. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among youths. Most People with severe mental health conditions die prematurely – as much as two decades early – due to preventable physical conditions.

To bring down the fatality of mental health-related cases, WHO began the WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health (2019-2023): Universal Health Coverage for Mental Health to guarantee access to quality and affordable care for mental health conditions in 12 countries, covering 100 million people.

The agenda of this scheme is that an additional 100 million people get access to quality and affordable mental health care by the year 2023. The Initiative will be implemented in these 12 countries, whereas Eight have already been identified. They are Bangladesh, Ghana, Jordan, Nepal, Paraguay, the Philippines, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe. These nations have already initiated a survey to get the bigger picture of mental health needs, services that need to be made available, opportunities, and main challenges.

The policy being developed are dependent on the results of the initial assessments. The assessment indicates the following: include improving mental health policy, and advancing services in both community-based general health settings and specialist settings.

But, after all the awareness and programs, mental health issues are still considered a stigma, and discrimination continues to be a challenge to social involvement and access to the right care.

Lastly, the pandemic has and continues to, take its toll on everyone’s mental health, but the ability to reconnect through World Mental Health Day 2022 will give us the platform and provide an opportunity to rekindle our efforts to protect and improve the mental health of all beings.
