Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen. My name is _____ _______, and I’d like to speak to you about World Habitat Day today.

World Habitat Day celebrates the sentiment that homes build lives and strengthen the future. This day, held on the first Monday of October each year, this year on October 3, aims to raise awareness of the basic right to shelter and remind people that they are also responsible for the habitat of future generations.

The origins of urbanisation can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia (now called Iraq). Uruk and Ur, which were located near the banks of the Euphrates River at the time, flourished during this period. Historians attribute the rise of urban areas to river valley civilizations in Egypt, India, and China. These towns were founded on agriculture and domestic cattle, but they quickly expanded into trading centers and merchant hubs.

According to data, urbanisation spread from ancient Mesopotamia to Egypt and then to ancient Greece. While Mesopotamian cities eventually faded away for reasons such as overcrowding, overuse of natural resources, and so on, subsequent ancient civilizations took care to avoid the less desirable consequences of urbanisation, particularly in Egypt.

Around 200 years ago, the growth of urban areas accelerated significantly as people sought jobs, which were, of course, mostly in cities where factories were located. Urbanization has grown rapidly in the last 50 years. A large number of people live in cities around the world, with Asia, Africa, and Latin America bearing the brunt of this urbanisation.

Today, countries around the world are witnessing the same pattern: people flocking to cities in search of different livelihoods and higher living standards. Cities, as economic centres, are constantly growing and adapting, but a lack of planning and adequate resources can cause major problems. Many urban residents do not have access to adequate housing in such circumstances.

To address this issue, the United Nations created and passed a resolution in 1985 to celebrate World Habitat Day on the first Monday of October each year. This day is observed by a number of countries, which collaborate with global and national organisations to investigate how urbanisation affects human habitats and the environment.

Four years later, the United Nations agency for urban development, now known as the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (U.N.-Habitat), established a special award to recognise initiatives that have made outstanding contributions to the construction of human habitats and the improvement of human life quality. This award, which consists of a plaque engraved with the winner’s name and accomplishment, is given out during the Global Observance of World Habitat Day.
