Malala was born on 12th July 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. She belongs to a Sunni family. In her family, she has two younger brothers and her parents. Her father is an education activist. In fact, it was her father who inspired her to go into politics and fight for social justice. Malala talked about the importance of education, especially for girls. She gave a speech at Peshawar asking the Taliban to give her back the right to education. She faced threats for the support she and her cause was gaining from all over the world. At the age of 15, on 9th October 2012, she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman.

Following the assassination attempt, the United Nations launched a petition named ‘I am Malala’. This was a demand to put children of Pakistan into schools by 2015. Pakistan introduced its first Right to Education bill as a result of the petition. Malala received the Youth Peace Prize. She was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013. In 2014, she won the Nobel Peace Prize. She is the youngest person to win this prize. As a gesture of respect, she was invited to open the Library of Birmingham, the world’s largest library. Adding to the list of awards she has received, Malala won the Sakharov Prize, which is the human rights award in Europe.

She graduated from the University of Oxford. In 2015, she opened a girl’s school in Lebanon for the Syrian Civil war refugees. In her book We Are Displaced, she mentions her work with the refugees as well as her own struggle with displacement. Malala is truly an inspiration for all the girls out there who still face struggles because of patriarchy.
