Gaganyaan Mission of India: Gaganyaan is an Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) project that aims to send a three-person crew to space for five to seven days by 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi originally announced the space project in his Independence Day address to the country in 2018.

ISRO aims to launch two unmanned flights into space ahead of the human trip as part of the Gaganyaan mission. The first unmanned Gaganyaan Mission of India was set to launch in December 2020, followed by a second mission in June 2021. However, it has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic disrupting ISRO’s activities and operations.

Highlights of Gaganyaan Mission of India

  • The Gaganyaan spacecraft will be launched into a 300-400 kilometre low earth orbit (LEO).
  • The entire cost of the scheme is projected to be less than Rs.10,000 crore.
  • Gaganyaan is notable since it would be the first Indian mission to take humans into space. If it succeeds, India would join the United States, Russia, and China as the fourth country to send a human into space.
  • ISRO is designing the spacecraft, while Russia is assisting with astronaut training.

The strategy of the Gaganyaan Mission of India

It is important to note the following strategies and targets of the Gaganyaan Mission which are stated below.

  • ISRO will be in charge of bringing the flying hardware to life through the industry.
  • Crew training, human life science technology development projects, and design evaluations will involve national agencies, laboratories, and academia.
  • The first human space flight demonstration is expected to be performed within 40 months after its approval. Two unmanned full complement flights will be conducted prior to this to establish confidence in the technical and mission management components.

The impact of the Gaganyaan Mission of India

The initiative is aimed to encourage domestic research and development in specialist scientific and technology fields. The success of Gaganyaan might pave the way for many more spacecraft experiments. It will also help India realise its ambition of building its own space station. Some of the other impacts of the mission are as follows

  • Medicine, agriculture, industrial safety, pollution, waste management, water and food resource management, and other fields have a lot of potential for technological spinoffs.
  • The human spaceflight programme will provide a one-of-a-kind gravitational platform in space for performing research and serving as a testing ground for future innovations.
  • The initiative is anticipated to boost the country’s economic activity in terms of job creation, human resource development, and improved industrial capabilities.

Advantages of the Gaganyaan Mission of India

The nation benefits from the human spaceflight programme in both concrete and subjective ways, including:

  • Progress on a long-term, cost-effective human and robotic exploration of the solar system and far beyond.
  • Human space travel, sample return missions, and scientific investigation will all benefit from advanced technology.
  • Future potential to participate actively in global space station construction and conduct national-interest scientific research
  • To participate in national development initiatives, provide a wide foundation for a bigger Academic and research connection.
  • In sophisticated scientific and R&D activities, there is plenty of room for job creation and human resource development.
  • A once-in-a-lifetime chance to inspire and enthuse Indian children, and to direct a large number of kids into professions in science and technology, as well as difficult employment that promotes knowledge, innovation, and
  • Through the sharing of difficult and peaceful aims, the programme will build international alliances and global security. A healthy human spaceflight programme may be used as a powerful instrument in foreign diplomacy.

Technologies required to execute the Gaganyaan Mission of India

The following are the most important new technologies required for the Gaganyaan programme:

  1. The launch vehicle with a human-grade
  2. Escape mechanisms for crews
  3. The habitational orbital module
  4. System of life support
  5. Selection and training of crew members, as well as related crew management activities.

A manned space programme is the logical next step for India in terms of space technology. With Gaganyaan’s achievement, India will join the ranks of space superpowers. It will assist India in making progress toward the development of its own space station. To guarantee a safe and effective manned space journey, it is critical to overcoming technological obstacles. For technological acquisition, international collaboration is essential.
