History of Father’s Day
In 1910, just like other Mother’s day events, there was a Mother’s day church service in Washington. A person named Sonora Smart Dodd was present there. Her mother was no more in the world when Sonora was 16 years old. Since then, it was her father, an American Civil War Veteran, who took care of her. She, along with her 5 siblings, grew up without a mother. But there was nothing that their father could not provide them.
To pay respect to her father’s efforts, she suggested that just like Mother’s day, there should be Father’s day too. The date was chosen to be 5th June, Sonora’s father’s birthday. Since the day was too soon to make the preparations, the minister decided the date to be 19th June. This is why we celebrate father’s day on the third Sunday of June.
