Good morning, everyone in the room. Greetings, my name is XYZ from Standard. Today, I will deliver a speech in honour of International Girl Child Day.

Every year on October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child is observed. The event recognises the significance of adolescent girls’ children and attempts to identify their power and potential by providing them with opportunities. It also seeks to amplify and empower the voices of adolescent girls worldwide.

By commemorating this day, an attempt is made to raise awareness of and eradicate issues affecting adolescent girls’ children. Girls face gender-based challenges all over the world, including child marriage, discrimination, violence, and limited educational opportunities. The theme for International Day of the Girl Child 2022 is “Our time is now—our rights, our future.”

The Beijing Declaration was the first conference to identify and discuss the rights of girls.

At the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which is widely regarded as the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing the rights of not only women but also girls. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. This day emphasises the importance of recognising the challenges that girls face around the world and empowering them to exercise their human rights.

Thirteen points Gender equality and women’s empowerment are among the Sustainable Development Goals that were adopted in 2017. To achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the International Day of the Girl Child is critical, with the goal of assisting young girls who have access to better health services, equal educational opportunities, and are free of gender-based discrimination or violence.

Girls are primed for a decade of rapid progress. It is time for all of us to take responsibility – with and for girls – and invest in a future that values their agency, leadership, and potential.

Happy International Girl Child Day

Use the long speech for International Girl Child Day in English provided below to help you write an International Girl Child Day speech.

Good morning, everyone in the room. Greetings, my name is XYZ from Standard. Today, I will deliver a speech in honour of International Girl Child Day.

The United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 66/170 on December 19, 2011, designating October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child. The International Day of the Girl Child draws attention to the importance of addressing the challenges that girls face, as well as promoting girls’ empowerment and the realization of their human rights.

Girls are breaking down stereotypes and barriers, including those directed at children with disabilities and those living in marginalised communities. Girls are creating a world that is relevant to them and future generations as entrepreneurs, innovators, and initiators of global movements.

The theme for this year is “Our time is now—our rights, our future.”

The International Day of the Girl (IDG) will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2022.Over the last decade, there has been a greater focus on issues important to girls among governments, policymakers, and the general public, as well as more opportunities for girls to have their voices heard on the global stage. Nonetheless, investments in girls’ rights remain limited, and girls continue to face a slew of obstacles to reaching their full potential, exacerbated by concurrent crises such as climate change, COVID-19, and humanitarian conflict. Girls all over the world continue to face unprecedented challenges to their education, physical and mental well-being, and the safeguards required for a life free of violence. Girls with disabilities face additional challenges in gaining access to support and services. COVID-19 has exacerbated existing burdens on girls around the world and eroded significant gains made in the last decade.

Adversity, on the other hand, breeds resourcefulness, creativity, tenacity, and resilience. The world’s 600 million adolescent girls have repeatedly demonstrated that, when given the skills and opportunities, they can be the changemakers driving progress in their communities, rebuilding stronger for all, including women, boys, and men.

Girls are primed for a decade of rapid progress. It is time for all of us to take responsibility – with and for girls – and invest in a future that values their agency, leadership, and potential.

This day has been observed as an “International Day of the Girl Child” or simply “International Girls’ Day” since December 19, 2011.

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution designating October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child.

The Beijing Declaration, issued in 1995 at the World Conference on Women in Beijing, was the first to advocate for women’s and girls’ rights. It was the first blueprint in world history to identify the need for addressing issues faced by adolescent girls all over the world.

International Day of the Girl Child began as part of Plan International’s “Because I am a Girl” campaign. Plan International is a non-governmental organisation that works in approximately 70 countries around the world.

In 2007, it spearheaded a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of nurturing girls worldwide, particularly in developing countries where conditions are worse. The campaign aimed to nurture girls, particularly in developing countries, to promote their rights, and to lift them out of poverty. During the campaign, the idea for International Day of the Girl Child was born, and it became a reality when its representatives requested that the Canadian federal government seek a coalition of supporters. The United Nations eventually became involved.

Countries adopted an action plan to support women’s rights and protect the future of young girls at the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing. It gained traction as a result of the initiative of Plan International and other organisations raising their voices in support of the protection of girls and women. Canada then formally proposed that it be adopted as a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly. As a result, on December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution recognising October 11, 2012, as the first International Day of the Girl Child, which was specifically centred on the grave issue of child marriages. This day is celebrated with a different theme each year. The inaugural theme was the abolition of child marriage.

Since then, this day has been observed all over the world, and various initiatives for girls’ and women’s empowerment have gained traction, with each year’s theme highlighting issues that girls face.

Its decision beautifully describes the true empowerment of girls, who are just as important to economic growth as boys. It recognises that girls’ meaningful participation in decisions that affect their lives is critical to breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and empowering young ladies to become empowered, free women of tomorrow.

Thank you and Happy International Girl Child Day
