International Anti Corruption Day Theme 2022

The International Anti Corruption Day Theme 2022 is “Uniting the World against Corruption”. 

This International Anti Corruption Day Theme 2022 aims to emphasise the critical relationship between anti-corruption and peace, security, and development. At its heart is the idea that combating this crime is everyone’s right and responsibility, and that only by working together and involving everyone and everything can we overcome the negative impact of this crime. States, government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public, and youth all play a role in uniting the world in the fight against corruption.

The 2022 IACD also marks the beginning of efforts to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC). Over the next year, culminating with IACD 2023, it will reflect on a better world made possible by the Convention’s collective push and, crucially, what gaps remain to ensure this is a truly strong mechanism for the years ahead.

International Anti-Corruption Day History

The United Nations took the first step in combating international corruption in December 2003 when it adopted the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC). It was written on October 31, 2003. UNAC is a treaty between UN member states that was signed on December 9, 2005, and went into effect on December 14, 2005. The goal of this treaty was to legally bind member states to work together to reduce corruption and enforce law and order. The agreement clarified five points, which are as follows:

– Taking the necessary steps to prevent corruption.

– Enforcing the rule of law and order.

– International cooperation is needed to reduce corruption.

– Asset recovery and return to the country of origin.

– To provide technical assistance and information exchange.

Let us inform you that the UNCAC headquarters are in Merida and New York. The United States Secretary-General serves as the depository, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime serves as the secretary to the meetings of the state parties. On December 9, 2006, India commemorated the first International Anti-Corruption Day by signing the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

International Anti-Corruption Day Significance 

Corruption is a multifaceted social, political, and economic phenomenon that affects every country. Corruption undermines democratic institutions, stifles economic growth, and contributes to political instability. Corruption undermines democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the rule of law, and creating bureaucratic quagmires whose sole purpose is to solicit bribes. Foreign direct investment is discouraged, and small businesses within the country frequently find it impossible to overcome the “start-up costs” required due to corruption.

Corruption has a negative impact on all aspects of society and is inextricably linked to conflict and instability, endangering social and economic development and undermining democratic institutions and the rule of law. 

Corruption is not only a byproduct of conflict, but it is also frequently one of its root causes. It exacerbates conflict and stifles peace processes by undermining the rule of law, worsening poverty, facilitating the illicit use of resources, and financing armed conflict. Corruption prevention, transparency promotion, and institutional strengthening are critical if the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are to be met.

Many of us have encountered some form of corruption in our dealings with business or government, but we may have overlooked it in order to “get things done.” This day serves as a reminder that we do not have to accept these practices and that we can speak out against them because they are both politically and morally wrong. The UN calls on people to fight corruption. This day emphasizes the importance of ethics in our lives. While we have been taught ethical behavior since we were children, we may have forgotten about it in the daily grind and hustle. This is the time to revisit and even relearn those lessons in order to guide our own behavior.

Today, Transparency International is a well-known organization that works to combat corruption in countries around the world and raises public awareness about it. Every two years, it hosts the International Anti-Corruption Conference, which brings together civil society, bureaucrats, nonprofits, and political leaders to discuss the unique, cross-cutting challenges posed by corruption. 

Transparency International also created the Corruption Perception Index in 1995 to measure and rank corruption across sectors and practices in various countries. The index now includes information from 180 countries.
