What is Cyclone Asani in Kerala?
The “Asani” name of the cyclone is given by Sri Lanka which means ‘wrath’ in Sinhalese. The last cyclone was named ‘Jawab’ by Saudi Arabia and that cyclone made landfall in India. The Asani is the first cyclone of the year. The report also suggests there is a yellow alert in six districts namely, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, and Palakkad districts. According to the Meteorological Department, the possibility of isolated heavy rains has been predicted. The other two states of India, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are on high alert too due to the Asani Cyclone Kerala.

Route of Asani Cyclone Kerala
Cyclone Asani is expected to make landfall on Myanmar’s coast this morning because of the strengthening of the depression into a deep depression over the Andaman Sea and adjacent to the southeast Bay of Bengal. The IMD also predicted that the Asani storm would continue to travel almost northward along and off the Andaman Islands towards Myanmar’s coast for the next 48 hours.
It is predicted that the Asani cyclone is about to reach the southeast Bay of Bengal in the next 12 hours. From the Bay of Bengal Asani will intensify into a depression. As a result, by Sunday evening, the system will intensify further and eventually develop into a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal’s easter portion.
Cyclone Asani in Kerala Updates
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted the thunderstorms with mild to moderate rain in various locations of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region. However, there is a Red Alert in coastal Andhra as cyclone Asani changes its route.
On Tuesday, at Visakhapatnam airport of Andhra Pradesh, flights were canceled. The Asani cyclone is likely to reach close to the Andhra coast on Wednesday. Then this storm weakens into a cyclone from a severe cyclone.
Due to the cyclone Asani, the South Central Railway (SCR) has also canceled 46 trains and diverted and rescheduled a few other trains.
A West Bengal Pollution Control Board official said that rains triggered by the Cyclone Asani significantly improved the air quality of Kolkata on Wednesday as the air index remained below 50 (particulate matter 2.5) in most parts of the city. Further, it is also reported that the air quality of Kolkata improved by 60 percent from last week.
