World Computer Literacy Day History
World Computer Literacy Day was established in 2001 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of an Indian company called N.I.I.T. N.I.I.T, which stands for National Institute of Information Technology, is a skills and talent development company founded in 1981 by Rajendra Singh Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani.
The company established World Computer Literacy Day in response to a study that revealed that men constituted the vast majority of computer users worldwide. As a result, N.I.I.T. took up the cause of educating more women and children through computer literacy. Since its inception in 1981, the company has expanded to more than 30 countries worldwide.
The computer’s history can be traced back to the early 1820s, when Charles Babbage created the “Difference Engine,” a mechanical computer capable of performing simple calculations. Prior to this invention, people performed calculations using a variety of inventions such as the abacus, Napier’s bones, the Pascaline adding machine, and the Leibniz Wheel. However, what set the ‘difference’ engine apart from others before it was that it was powered by steam and could solve logarithmic equations.
Computers have undergone numerous improvements and designs since then to become our laptops, phones, and desktop computers. Computers used to be so large that they could take up the entire length of a room! But, thanks to modern technology, we can carry all of that scientific knowledge in the palm of our hands.

Significance of World Computer Literacy Day
On Computer Literacy Day, the importance of computers in daily life is emphasised. Computer literacy refers to an individual’s ability to use computers effectively. Today, computer literacy may include the use of search engines, social media websites, and common day-to-day applications such as Microsoft Office or Google Suite. Computer Literacy Day is significant because it encourages the use of digital technologies, particularly among young people and women. Furthermore, it is critical because, according to reports, computer literacy is not widely available in poor countries. As a result, it is critical to raise awareness of the importance of computer literacy.
Check out the following statistics on computer use in developed and developing countries:
- In June 2018, 55% of the world’s population used the internet.
- Despite accounting for 55% of the global population, only 49% of Asians use the internet.
- North America is home to 4.8% of the world’s population, and 95% of them use the internet.
Why Should We Commemorate World Computer Literacy Day?
Nowadays, having computer skills can make a significant difference in one’s personal and professional life. Computer literacy skills range from a basic understanding of how to use a computer to performing intermediate tasks such as using software and computer programmes. The purpose of World Computer Literacy Day is to raise awareness of the following:
- The digital divide makes global distribution of digital skills difficult.
- Promoting the importance of widespread computer literacy, which includes understanding how computers work, how to programme them, and how to use them.
