The 2022 Global Handwashing Day theme is “Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene.”
The day is to remind us that handwashing with soap and water is one of the best steps we can take to stop the spread of germs, and prevent ourselves from getting sick. Each year on this day, the CDC works with world partners to underline Global Handwashing Day and raise consciousness about the need and value of cleaning with soap and water.
The 2022 theme, “Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene,” calls for synchronized action toward worldwide hand hygiene.
Global Handwashing Day Theme History
The First Global Hand Washing Day focus was school children. In that year, the members took an oath to get the maximum number of school children handwashing with soap, as a result, over 120 million students washed their hands in more than 70 countries on that day. The Day was initiated by the Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP) in August 2008 at the annual World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden. The year 2008 was declared the International Year of Sanitation. 2022 Global Handwashing Day Importance
Handwashing Day is celebrated to promote consciousness of the need to wash hands with soap. Various activities on this day encourage children to take it as a sport, which helps them develop a habit.
Diarrhoea accounts for almost 1.2 million child deaths annually around the globe.
Pneumonia, an acute respiratory infection, is the number one cause of death among kids under five years. This ARI kills 1.8 million kids every year.
Handwashing with soap and water is projected to bring down diarrhoea cases by 30% and respiratory infections by 21% in children under the age group of five. It is also a very effective and inexpensive way to prevent kids from diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections.
Proper hygiene and routine cleaning of hands with soap before food, after touching any surface, or after the toilet is the perfect and easiest way to bring down deaths by half in cases of diarrhoea and one-fourth in ARI cases.

- Local Activity: On this Day, raise awareness by doing campaigns. Collaborate with the local body to promote the importance of washing hands. Organize events.
