Dhyan Chand Award 2022 Winners List: Know More About It!

The Khel Ratna Award is India’s highest athletic prize, formally known as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. It is given out yearly by the Government of India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The award was established in 1991-1992 to recognize a sportsperson’s performance during the calendar year. The prize was named after Rajiv Gandhi (1944-1991), India’s previous Prime Minister. Based on the recommendations of the 2014 award selection committee, the Ministry updated the criteria in February 2015 to consider performance over four years. Nominations for a particular year are accepted until April 30, or the final business day of April, with up to two athletes nominated for each athletic discipline. A twelve-member committee analyses a sportsperson’s performance at international competitions such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. The committee then presents its suggestions for approval to the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.

From August 6, 2021, The Award Renamed As Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award was named after Major Dhyan Chand (1905-79), an Indian field hockey player, primarily one of the best hockey players of all time, who had scored more than 1000 goals over his 20 years of career from 1926 to 1948.

In the year 2022, there will be 85 recipients from the field of 15 different sports.

They are- Badminton, Billiards, Boxing, Cricket, Chess, Athletics, Gymnastics, Field Hockey, Para-badminton, Para-Athletics, Snooker, Shooting, Para- Shooting, Yacht Racing, Wrestling, Tennis, Table Tennis, and Weightlifting.

Dhyan Chand Award Prize Money

The Indian government and the Department of Sport offer the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award to athletes who have excelled in their sports over four years. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports organizes it every year. The award includes a monetary reward of Rs 25 lakh. This award is the top honor in athletics, and it is something that every athlete hopes to achieve at some time in their career.

Dhyan Chand Award 2022 Winners List

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the National Sports Awards 2022. On November 30, the recipients will be given prizes by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu will present Achanta Sharath Kamal with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest athletic honor, on November 30 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

• The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is awarded for the most remarkable and excellent achievement by a sportsperson in the past four years.

• The Dhyanchand Award for Lifetime Achievement is granted to athletes who have made significant contributions to sports via their performance.

• All nominations for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award are sent to the National Anti-Doping Agency and the SAI, who will check them against the stated accomplishments and doping certification, respectively. Any athlete who has been punished or is under investigation for using World Anti-Doping Agency-prohibited substances or compounds is ineligible for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
