Inventions And Discoveries of Alfred Nobel
Nobel established a small factory to produce nitroglycerin in 1862. He also conducted research to find a safe way to control the explosives’ detonation. Continue reading to learn about all of Alfred Nobel inventions and discoveries.
Practical Detonator
In 1863, he invented a practical detonator. It is made up of a wooden plug that was inserted into a larger charge of nitroglycerin contained in a metal container. This invention established Nobel’s reputation as an inventor, as well as the fortune he would amass as an explosives manufacturer.
Blasting Oil and Blasting Cap
Nobel invented a blasting cap, which was an improved detonator, in 1865. This invention marked the beginning of the modern use of high explosives.
Dynamite
In 1867, he created dynamite, his next significant invention. He received patents for it in both the United Kingdom (1867) and the United States (1868). With the invention of dynamite, he gained worldwide fame, and it was soon used to blast funnels, cut canals, and build railways and roads. In the 1870s and 1880s, Nobel established a network of factories throughout Europe to produce dynamite.
Blasting Gelatin
In 1875, he developed a more powerful form of dynamite and named it blasting gelatin. The following year, he patented it. He had also discovered by chance that combining a nitroglycerin solution with a fluffy substance called nitrocellulose results in a tough, plastic material. It has greater blasting power and resistance than standard dynamites.
Ballistite
In 1887, he invented ballistite. It was a precursor to cordite and one of the first nitroglycerin smokeless powders.
He also invented many things, such as artificial silk and leather. In total, he registered over 350 patents in various countries. He had never been married.
Establishment of Nobel Prizes
In 1895, he developed angina pectoris. He died in 1896 at his villa in San Remo, Italy, of a cerebral haemorrhage.
At the time of his death, he was the owner of more than 90 factories that produced explosives and ammunition. He had deposited his will in a bank in Stockholm, and when it was opened, it surprised his family, friends, and the general public.
He bequeathed the majority of his fortune to establish what became known as international awards, the Nobel Prizes.
He established the awards to honour his lifelong interests in physics, chemistry, physiology, and literature. The abundance of evidence indicates that his friendship with prominent Austrian pacifist Bertha von Suttner inspired him to found the peace prize.
