The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Svante Pääbo, a Swedish geneticist for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution. It was announced on Monday, October 3rd, at 11:30 CEST.
Winner | About the Winner | Awarded For |
Svante Pääbo | Svante Pääbo born on 20th April 1955, is a Swedish geneticist specializing in the field of evolutionary genetics. Pääbo is known as one of the founders of paleogenetics, a discipline that uses the methods of genetics to study early humans and other ancient populations. | His find, i.e, sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day humans. He also made the sensational discovery of a previously unknown hominin, Denisova. Importantly, Pääbo also found that gene transfer had occurred from these now extinct hominins to Homo sapiens following the migration out of Africa around 70,000 years ago. This ancient flow of genes to present-day humans has physiological relevance today, for example affecting how our immune system reacts to infections. |
Emil von Behring received the first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1901 for his work on serum therapy, particularly its application against diphtheria, by which he opened a new path in the domain of medical science and thus placed a victorious weapon in the hands of the physician.
