International Day Of Disaster Risk Reduction History

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is a yearly event that encourages citizens and governments to collaborate in order to make their communities and countries more disaster-resilient. The United Nations General Assembly established October 13 as the International Day for Natural Disaster Risk Reduction as part of its declaration of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.

In 1989, the United Nations General Assembly established International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction to promote a global culture of risk awareness and disaster risk reduction.

The General Assembly decided in 2022 to keep the yearly commemoration as a tool for promoting a global mindset of natural disaster mitigation, including prevention and preparedness. In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 13 to be the official date, renaming it International Day for Disaster Reduction.

At the third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, in 2015, the international community was informed that disasters strike hardest at the local level, with the potential for massive social and economic devastation. Every year, millions of people are displaced as a result of natural disasters. Catastrophic events, many of which have been exacerbated by global warming, have a negative impact on sustainable development investment and the outcomes desired.

Disasters have a significant impact on low- and middle-income countries, particularly in terms of fatalities, injured or displaced people, and damage to critical infrastructure. While other global issues may appear to be more pressing, hunger and poverty cannot be eradicated unless we address disaster risk reduction.

International Day For Natural Disaster Reduction 2022 Theme

The theme of the 2022 International Day of Disaster Reduction is “Early Warning.” The International Day in 2022 will focus on Sendai Framework Target G: “significantly increase the availability and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030.” The urgency of meeting this goal was heightened in March 2022 by UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ announcement that “the United Nations will spearhead new action to ensure that every person on Earth is protected by early warning systems within five years.”

The Sendai Framework’s primary goal is to avoid new risks while reducing existing ones. However, if this is not possible, people-centered early warning systems and preparedness can allow for early action to minimise the harm to people, assets, and livelihoods. #DRRDay #EarlyWarningForAll
