The Ministry of MSME has set up a Centre for Experimentation, Innovation, and Design for the Khadi Village and Industries Commission (KVIC). This is to empower the Khadi Institutions across the country. The mission of the newly formed body is to create clothing, home goods, and fashion accessories that appeal to individuals of all ages. The goal of the India’s first Khadi Centre of Excellence is to make Khadi a worldwide, classic, and value-driven brand.
Narayan Rane, the Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has opened this in New Delhi. Minister of State for MSME Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma, Minister of State for Textiles Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles U P Singh, and Secretary, Ministry of MSME B.B Swain also attended the event.
Union Minister Narayan Rane inaugurated India’s first Khadi Centre of Excellence hub. India’s first Khadi Centre of Excellence has been inaugurated at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi. Its spokes will come up in Gandhinagar, Shillong, Kolkata and Bengaluru. The same was also opened by the minister. The First Khadi Centre of Excellence In India aims to add the indigenous fabric’s appeal. This will be done especially amongst youth, by introducing latest designs and adopting international standard processes.
The minister has also launched the website for Khadi Centre of Excellence where the latest design and technology interventions will be uploaded for usage of the khadi institutions.
“There is a need to assess the popularity of khadi as compared to other leading players in the Indian fashion industry. Our designers must introduce such appealing designs in khadi that people are tempted to buy khadi as much as they buy other clothing,” he said.
He further added that Khadi has a big responsibility of contributing to the nation’s development and fulfilling the goal of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’. At the same time, the designers have the responsibility of introducing new designs in khadi to make it more appealing for the youth.
A Memorandum of Understanding for setting up of India’s first Khadi Centre of Excellence was signed between KVIC and NIFT last year. This project will be implemented over a period of 3 years.
According to the official statement, the Khadi Centre of Excellence will work to introduce the latest designs and adopt processes of international standards to create new fabrics and clothing as per the needs of the domestic and global buyers. The Khadi Centre of Excellence will also upskill the current khadi institutions to introduce new designs and techniques in the manufacturing process to diversify its product line.
