A very warm welcome and good morning to all the dignitaries on dice, faculty, staff, and my dear friends; we have all gathered here today to celebrate the 44th engineer’s day. Every year on September 15th, the engineering fraternity in India celebrates this day.
The date was chosen because it is the birthday of Dr. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a legendary engineer (M. Visvesvaraya). This great contributor to growth and engineering was born on this day 152 years ago. He is regarded as one of the greatest engineers of all time, having made significant contributions to India through his vision and dedication in the field of engineering.
In 1955, he was awarded the highest state award in India, the “Bharat Ratna,” for his contributions. He was internationally recognised for his brilliance in harnessing water resources, including the successful design and construction of several river dams, bridges, and irrigation and drinking water schemes throughout India. Each letter in the word Engineer has its own meaning, such as E- eager,N- never-ending learning,G- genius,I- intelligent,N- Nation’s Builder,E- effort maker,E- excellence,R- rider.
“Engineering is the professional art of applying science to the optimum conversion of natural resources to the benefit of man,” according to a well-known quote.
This quote exemplifies engineers’ influential role in national development. Engineers are those who work at the intersection of science and society. Engineers are the foundation of development and technology. Today, India has a significant vision and mission in the areas of space research, defence development, rural development, renewable energies, agriculture and food processing, information and communication technology, education, and so on, and for this, engineers with vision, passion to turn vision into action, courage to think differently, and courage to confront problems are required. According to the honourable former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s “India Vision 2020 for Transforming Nation into Developed Country,” not only engineers, but everyone, should have the ambition to live in a developed country, and each of us should demonstrate that integrity towards the development of the nation.
Finally, I’d like to remind you of an old adage that “engineers rule the world,” and since we’re all on our way to becoming engineers, we should make a promise to ourselves to use our intelligence and knowledge for the benefit of society and mankind.
Thank you.
