Good morning, everyone! It is an honour and a privilege to be a part of such a happy occasion. Hello, my name is XYZ. It is World Polio Day today. This day honours global efforts toward a polio-free future, as well as the selfless sacrifices of those on the frontlines of the battle to eradicate polio from every corner of the globe.

According to WHO, due to global vaccination efforts, cases of wild poliovirus have decreased by more than 99.9% since 1980. Every year on October 24, World Polio Day is observed to raise awareness about polio vaccination and eradication, as well as to encourage countries to remain vigilant in their fight against the disease.

World Polio Day is observed to commemorate Jonas Salk’s birth anniversary. He was the first person to lead the first team that developed the Inactivated (killed) Polio Vaccine (IPV). Rotary International, an international service organisation that brings together business, professional, and community leaders to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance goodwill, peace, and understanding around the world, initiated the day. In the last three decades, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), led by national governments and the WHO, has taken care to monitor the disease.

On this day, global organisations such as Rotary International and other similar clubs and organisations host a variety of events and fund-raisers with the goal of raising awareness about polio. Rallies and walks, as well as competitions in schools and clubs, are examples of events. It also demonstrates that in the global fight to eradicate polio, no member is too small to make a difference!

The overarching theme for this year is Stories of Progress: Past and Present. It was chosen to recognise the progress made thus far in the fight to eradicate polio, as well as the efforts of everyone involved in the process.

Because there is no cure for polio, the only way to prevent its spread is to immunise your baby as soon as possible. So make sure you protect your baby’s life by getting him vaccinated on time, and you’ll also be helping to reduce the spread of this deadly virus!
