Saina Nehwal is recognised as India’s most successful badminton player, and she is undoubtedly the top female badminton player in the country. She has accomplished several extraordinary accomplishments in recent years, like accomplishing a hat trick of Indonesian Open championships, earning the world’s second ranking, winning three consecutive international events, and upsetting top-seeded players in World Badminton. Her greatest achievement was making history as the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic quarterfinals. This year, she received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for her outstanding performance in international events.
Harvir Singh and Usha Nehwal’s daughter Saina Nehwal was born into a Jat household. The family later relocated to Hyderabad, Telangana, where they presently reside. Her parents were both past state champions in badminton, therefore she inherited her talent and love for the sport. As a result, she began playing badminton at the age of eight. She was coached by Nani Prasad and was subjected to a gruelling physical regimen devised by her trainer when she was only a youngster. Her hard effort is still paying off for her.
Saina Nehwal changed several schools. Her father used to work at Campus School CCS HAU, Hisar, where she attended Lower KG to third grade. Bhartiya Vidhya Bhawan’s Vidhyasharam School and the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) School Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, studied there from fourth to tenth grades. She used to be a shy, quiet, and diligent student at school.
In 2006, Saina Nehwal demonstrated her mettle by winning the coveted Asian Satellite Badminton event and became the badminton under-19 National Champion. In 2008, she became the first Indian woman to win the World Junior Badminton Championships, and in 2009, she became the first Indian woman to win the Indonesian Open, a BWF Super Series event. She won a Bronze Medal in the major event during the London Olympics 2012, making her the first Indian to earn a medal in the sport. She has received several honours and awards to date. Saina Nehwal won the Women’s Singles of India Open Grand Prix Gold Tournament in January and the Australian Super Series in June 2014. She is now ranked as the world’s No. 7 badminton player.
Saina Nehwal is one of the athletes funded by ‘Olympic Gold Quest,’ a charity that helps athletes with Olympic Gold potential. In the Indian Badminton League, she plays for the Hyderabad Hotshots. Pullela Gopichand, a national coach, is now mentoring her. She is also the Sahara India Pariwar brand ambassador.
