Welcome, principal sir, teachers, and dear friends, to the honourable chief guest. As you are all aware, today is National Unity Day, and on this special occasion, I am writing a few words about the significance of National Unity Day. I hope you enjoyed and were inspired by this speech of mine.
Every year on October 31st, National Unity Day commemorates the birth anniversary of India’s Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Sardar Patel is the only great person who has made the greatest contribution to the formation of United India, as a result of which our country is united today. Even in that century, Sardar Patel was a forward-thinking individual, much like today’s youth. There were over 500 princely states in our country after we gained independence in 1947, but Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel integrated these princely states into the country with his clear policy. India is the only country where people of various religions, sects, and castes coexist in peace and harmony. Our country is united in its diversity, and this is its greatest strength. Sardar Patel’s efforts have made all of this possible. We will never forget what he has done for us. To honour Sardar Patel, his birthday is observed as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas).
The strength of any country lies in its unity, and the development of any country is only possible because of peace, prosperity, and unity. National integration promotes the development of people while also assisting in the formation of a strong country. As a result, the most distinguishing feature of our country is that all Indians here live together without discrimination. People of various castes, religions, and sects live here, and different languages are spoken in different regions, but we Indians understand each other well, respect each other, and support each other in joy and sorrow.
The significance of National Unity Day should be understood by all citizens. We and our country will be safe only if all Indians work together. Finally, I’d like to emphasise the importance of Indian unity for the country’s unity and national security. As a result, on this auspicious occasion, we all Indians swear that we will always uphold India’s unity and integrity. (Jai Hind, Jai Bharat).
Thank You

Good morning, everyone! Greetings, my name is XYZ. Today is National Unity Day, and I am honoured to raise awareness through my words by giving a speech on National Unity Day. National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is observed on October 31st, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was an Indian statesman, politician, and freedom fighter who was instrumental in India’s political integration.
Sardar Patel’s Tribute
Sardar Patel was India’s first Deputy Prime Minister, and he was instrumental in bringing small kingdoms into the Indian Union. He was a well-known social activist and freedom fighter associated with the Indian National Congress prior to independence. He led the Gujarat Satyagraha and was involved in the non-cooperation and Quit-India movements.
Though Sardar Patel was a well-known freedom fighter, his role as an administrator during and after India’s independence is more important. When the British left India, nearly 565 independent princely states gained independence. Sardar Patel, who was also the Home Minister at the time, persuaded these states to join the Union of India.
He tried every trick in the book, convincing some and threatening military action when necessary. He refused to give up his vision and dream of a single united India across its entire length and breadth. Sardar Patel’s tenacity in achieving a united India earned him the moniker “Iron Man of India.”
On the anniversary of his birth, National Unity Day honours his desire for a politically and culturally integrated India.
First National Unity Day
In 2014, the Home Ministry issued an official notification declaring October 31st, Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary, as National Unity Day every year.
According to the Ministry’s official statement, “the observance of national unity day will provide an opportunity to reaffirm our nation’s inherent strength and resilience to withstand actual and potential threats to our country’s unity, integrity, and security.”
In 2014, events were held across the country to commemorate Sardar Patel’s 139th birthday. Run for Unity events were held in cities such as Delhi, Nagpur, and Mumbai. Several politicians and athletes attended the events. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu paid tribute to Sardar Patel at Patel Chowk in New Delhi.
Commemorative events were also held at Indian embassies around the world. People congratulated Sardar Patel and remembered his contribution to India’s integration.
Activities & Celebrations
On National Unity Day, a variety of events are planned in educational institutions, schools, government offices, and other locations. In this regard, both the federal and state governments issue guidelines to the relevant organisations.
Special commemorative events are held in schools, where children pay their respects to Sardar Patel and speak about his will and determination to create a politically integrated India.
On October 31, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 182-meter-long statue of Sardar Patel in Gujarat. It is 150 kilometres from Surat and faces the Sardar Sarovar Dam. On National Unity Day, thousands of people from all over India come to pay their respects to Sardar Patel at the statue and museum.
A fitting tribute is also paid to Sardar Patel in Parliament, by members of both the ruling and opposition parties.
Conclusion
Sardar Patel was India’s unifier, responsible for its political integration on his own. We would not be united as we are today if he did not have an unwavering commitment to a united India. National Unity Day is a fitting tribute to India’s Iron Man and his resolve.
