If we look into Hindu mythology, there is a reason that makes this festival auspicious. King Bhagirath prayed to Brahma to purify his ancestor’s soul. Eventually, this would give them salvation. Lord Brahma asked the king to pray to Lord Shiva instead. Lord Shiva listened to the king’s prayers and brought Ganga to the earth. The Ganga river brought life to people around it. Hence, we celebrate this festival.
