The UGC has stated that CUET would be expanded to accept candidates for postgraduate courses as well. Since the official CUET dates for UG courses admission were issued a week ago, more than 1 lakh candidates had applied. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, opposes the admission of applicants to CUET since the syllabus of the CUET is exclusively based on NCERT, which is disadvantageous to students from the state board. Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education, wrote to Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy on Sunday, claiming that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) did not infringe on the rights of states and union territories.

“Since education is on the competing list, the central government can also take steps to improve education in the country,” he said.

“CUET aims to eliminate the need to choose between coaching offering a choice of 13 languages as the medium and reducing financial burden while increasing access,” Pradhan added.

CUET Is For A Better Education System

In contrast to summative evaluation, which encourages a coaching culture, the Union Minister stated that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasises formative evaluation.

The exam is in the interest of disadvantaged groups. Students may apply to many universities of their choosing using a single application form, minimize financial stress and improve accessibility, he added in his letter to Mr Ponmudy.

“There is no need to infringe on the rights of the states/UTs when they may take the entrance test in any of 13 languages and pick from hundreds of exam centres around the country…,” continued Pradhan.
