Anti-Tobacco Day: Every year on May 31, the globe observes World No Tobacco Day. The World Health Organization’s Member States established this in 1987 to raise worldwide awareness of tobacco addiction and the needless death and illness it causes. The World Health Assembly declared 7 April 1988 to be “World No-Smoking Day” in a resolution voted in 1987. In 1988, a resolution was approved calling for World No Tobacco Day to be observed every year on May 31. Its goal is to prevent mortality caused by tobacco-related illnesses.

Tobacco usage is the world’s second leading cause of death. It is commonly known that tobacco will kill half of those who smoke regularly today or around 650 million people.

Smoking tobacco is the major cause of respiratory ailments such as COPD, TB, and other lung diseases. The WHO outlawed all tobacco advertising and promotion in 2008. China, being the world’s most populous country, dominates the cigarette business.

This annual event educates the public on the harms of smoking, tobacco firms’ business methods, what the WHO is doing to combat the tobacco pandemic, and what people all over the globe can do to assert their right to health and a healthy lifestyle while also protecting future generations.

Importance of Anti-Tobacco Day

  • It demonstrates how the cigarette business causes poverty.

Around 80% of tobacco-related fatalities occur in poor and middle-income nations. To put it another way, the poorest individuals are the ones that suffer the most. Tobacco addiction misdirects income that could be spent on education, food, or health care.

  • It cautions us about the consequences of passive smoking.

Secondhand smoking is responsible for approximately 600,000 fatalities per year. Unfortunately, children make up around 28% of the deaths.

  • It depicts the environmental devastation caused by the tobacco business.

Tobacco requires a lot of fertilizers and pesticides to grow. Some of these poisonous components can contaminate water supplies, but the damage isn’t limited to that. The production process produces about 2 million tonnes of garbage and takes almost 4.3 million acres of land. This is believed to contribute between 2% and 4% to global deforestation.

The theme of Anti-Tobacco Day

Millions of tobacco addicts stopped because of the Covid-19 pandemic. To commemorate World No Tobacco Day 2021, WHO created a global campaign with the tagline “Commit to Quit.” This may contribute to better settings that encourage cigarette cessation by:

– Encouraging strong smoke cessation measures.

– Improving access to smoking cessation programmes.

– Raising awareness about the tobacco industry’s practices.

– To help people who desire to quit smoking through the Quit and Win programmes.

Tobacco is death in disguise

To make World No Tobacco Day a success, as many people as possible from as many countries must participate. Although World No Tobacco Day is only one day a year, efforts to disseminate the word about the risks of tobacco use must continue all year.

Tobacco usage causes one out of every ten premature deaths in adults throughout the world. Each year, the worldwide burden of tobacco-related fatalities is expected to treble, from 5 million in 2005 to 10 million in 2020.

History of Tobacco

Tobacco and tobacco-related goods have been around since at least 6,000 BC. Nicotiana tabacum, or tobacco, is a member of the Nicotiana genus, which is closely related to the toxic nightshade and was originally exclusively found in the Americas.

The first Europeans to notice smokings are Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres. It was in Cuba that Jerez developed a strong smoking habit, which he brought back to Spain.

How to Quit Smoking?

It’s difficult to quit smoking gradually. It is simpler to stop it all at once. Stopping smoking abruptly has no negative consequences. The troubles that come with quitting smoking are only transitory, lasting five to seven days.

  • Take everything one day at a time.
  • Delay each cigarette for one hour.
  • Do not purchase in bulk. Do not have tobacco for cigarettes on hand.
  • Inform your family, friends, and coworkers that you are quitting smoking and would appreciate their support.
  • Change your surroundings.
  • Remove any smoke and ashtrays from your home.
  • Make your house a no-tobacco zone.
  • The craving stage lasts no more than five minutes. Wait for the yearning to pass.

Tobacco Today

Tobacco and tobacco products are now more strictly restricted. Companies have lost a slew of cases and are now required to properly mark their products as having a negative impact on human health. Tobacco advertising is also strictly restricted and limited.

Despite this, cigarette firms make billions of dollars every year while endangering other people’s health. It is believed that about 1 billion people smoke tobacco on the globe today. The cost of this addiction and its supporters in terms of health costs and environmental harm is in the trillions of dollars, and greater effort must be made to educate individuals, particularly teens and young adults, about the hazards of smoking.
