Mallikarjun Kharge, a veteran Karnataka leader, defeated his rival Shashi Tharoor to become the first non-Gandhi Congress president in 24 years.
Kharge received 7897 of the 9385 votes cast, while Tharoor received only 1072.
Kharge is also the only Congress leader to have served as leader of the opposition in a state assembly (Karnataka), as leader of the party in Lok Sabha, and as leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha.
He is the grand old organization's first Scheduled Caste chief in four decades.
