The Indian government has chosen 27 Indians living overseas to receive the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA), which are the highest honor given to Indians living abroad, including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and organizations or institutions established and run by them. These awards are given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions both in India and abroad. The awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at the 17th edition of the PBSA, which is scheduled to take place from January 8 to 10 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The selection panel for the awards was chaired by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and included External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and other distinguished dignitaries from various fields. The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) is the highest honor given to Indians living abroad, including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and organizations or institutions established and run by them. It is awarded by the government of India to individuals who have made exceptional contributions in their field of work, both in India and abroad. The award is presented annually on Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (Non-Resident Indian Day), which is celebrated on January 9 to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915. The award ceremony is usually held in India and is attended by a large number of people of Indian origin from around the world. The award consists of a plaque and a cash prize.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the theme for the 2023 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (a conference for people of Indian origin) will be “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal”. This theme emphasizes the valuable role that the Indian diaspora plays in advancing India’s progress.
